The Program
The HANAC Adolescent Literacy Program follows an approach that integrates the Common Core curriculum with project based learning for participants who scored well below their grade level on the English Language Arts exam. Deemed by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) as one of the "best adolescent literacy programs" in their portfolio, our program aims not only to raise literacy proficiency, but to provide our students with the understanding that academic rigor and community involvement are foundations for success.

Participants learn to use text based evidence and the process of learning to analyze this evidence. In addition, our participants learn how to actively engage in discussions where the teacher serves as the classroom facilitator. Interactive field trips and community service projects help shape our participants into well rounded individuals and positive members of the community.
Staff and teachers
We believe that teachers should serve as the facilitator and guide for our students to become self-learners through exploration, research, and community involvement. In order for our students to become effective explorers and researchers, they are taught the skills necessary to be career ready and college bound and to be aware of potential career opportunities.

To qualify, students must have scored well below their grade level on the English language Arts exam. Space is limited to 20 participants.
