Civic/Citizenship Program

HANAC’s comprehensive Civic/Citizenship program is designed to assist immigrants in their preparation for INS Citizenship exams. These classes work in conjunction with our English Language Skills program (ESOL) by offering a broad curriculum including U.S. history and citizenship. Classes range from basic level to advanced in the preparation of students for the INS Citizenship exam.

This program is provided during evening hours to accommodate participant work schedules. It operates from September to June, with classes meeting Monday through Friday from 6:00pm to 9:30pm, and on Saturday’s from 10:00am to 1:00pm.

In addition, the Civic/Citizenship Program provides extensive referral services to support the participants in their efforts to acclimate and succeed in their new home. We refer clients to services ranging from medical and mental health to housing and day care to entitlement programs and substance abuse programs.

HANAC serves approximately 100 students annually in this program funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development.
